Just a mere four Halloweens ago, Alexandria Bishop’s sister asked her to do her makeup to complement her costume. Bishop had always loved art and had spent plenty of time drawing while she was growing up. Yet, it was that one question from her sister that would change the trajectory of the now-25-year-old Alexandria’s life.
“When I did the makeup application that Halloween,“ says Bishop – a 2011 Brandon High School graduate, “I knew immediately that I loved the profession.” It was then that she decided to “live life well.” She left her community college courses and loaded her makeup work onto the now-defunct, 6-second video sharing app Vine. And she quickly went viral - as she was one of the few emerging artists that was doing horror-based makeup. Quickly, she started getting hired for local bands and music videos.
Then, this past March, she applied for the highly-regarded FACE Awards hosted by NYX Professional Makeup and ultimately made the top six finalists out of 14,000 applicants throughout the United States and Canada. “I’ve been watching the awards for years,” she says. “the work I saw during the competitions was amazing and it was unbelievable that I was part of that crowd.”
Her reward – a two-week trip to Los Angeles to complete the rigorous competition judged in various stages by professional make -up artists (including her favorite artist Ve Neill, who is a three-time Academy Award winner for her work in the movies Beetlejuice, Mrs. Doubtfire and Ed Wood) and national online voting. In the end, she didn’t win the competition, yet did receive the “Most Inspiring Award” out of the top 6 contestants, plus $15,000 and a year-supply of NYX makeup.
“I’d didn’t think I’d ever be there,” says Bishop. “So just to be there is a gift itself.”
She now has enough work to devote two days a week to makeup gigs and spends another two days working at her mom’s adult foster care home -- Country Acre Assisted Living on Sawmill Lake Rd.
